Rough Turning (Step 5 of 5)

Three rough-turned hira daiko shells emerge from the kiln after 6 weeks of carefully controlled drying. The sensors in the sample block of wood inside the drums are connected to a remote moisture meter. The moisture readings are confirmed by accurately weighing the sample. Those readings are used daily to adjust the temperature and humidity microprocessor controllers shown here in the gray box.
